UK Tribes

I have now started researching that youth markets and target audience in order to understand the target audience i wish to have for my magazine which will be of an 'indie' genre. According the the Channel 4 Youth Markets, the catagorism of the youth market consists of:

The main groups are Townies, Trendies, Indie Scenesters and Young Alts.

The group of Townies consists of:
-Ravers
-Chavs
-Casuals
-Sports Junkies
-Boy Racers

The group of Young Alts includes:
-Scene Kids
-Gamers
-Emos
-Skaters
-Metalheads
The group of Indie Scenesters include groups such as:
-Geeks
-Hipsters
-Craft Kids

And lastly the group of Trendies consists of 'Rahs'. Trendies are said to be the mainstream as well as Townies. Where are Indie Scenesters and Young Alts appear to be the more individual groups or 'indies' and therefore, i have decided that they are the target audience for my magazine. The group of Indie Scenesters aspire to be ahead of the crowd. Indies aren't afraid to stand out and be themselves. Both boys and girls where tight fitting clothes aswell as makeup and accessories. The look they usually go for consists of skinny jeans, Converse, stripes, tight tops and shirts. They usually tend to shop in Uniqlo, Topman/Topshop, American Apparel and lastly Urban Outfitters.  They love to be the first to pick up a new fashion statement that did once used to be popular. Indie Scenesters are festival go-ers. This shows that they are heavily interested in music. They have many bands that they like and listen to. Their favorite list of bands is forever changing. They enjoy reading up on bands and music.   I have done further research into the groups of Indie Scenesters and Young Alts and this is as follows:

Youth market catagorism for Kerrang, NME and Q magazines:

Youth market catagorism for media types such as magazines, radio, TV and newspapers:

and lastly, youth market catagorism for radio stations:

My magazine will be competing against magazines such as NME, Kerrang and Q and so I have decided to research the target audience of those magazines. Through researching this, I have concluded that the main target audience for this genre of magazine is teenagers and young adults aged 16 to about 21. You can tell that the magazines are aimed at this age group as it is an informal magazine appealing to younger people. The contents of what is included in the magazines is information about bands and gigs which are obviously aimed at the generation of 16-21 year olds.

Knowing the target audience of the magazine is vital so that i know what type of advertisements can be featured in the magazine. The target audience can also be identified by what adverts are in there.
I have researched into this and found a pie chart on adverts that can be found in NME:

This shows that NME mainly advertise music concerts and gigs. Therefore the readers of NME would be people old enough to go to concerts and also people who are interested in 'indie' music and bands. 85% of adverts in NME are about music so the audience of NME are obviously heavily interested in music.

The magazine industry is a competitive industry. Everyone reads magazines and everyone has different intrests and ideas about the magazines. To make the most successful magazine you must be able to identify which genre of magazine will attract the most people. I have looked into this and found a pie chart of different magazines that people buy:

From this, it is evident that the majority of magazines that are bought are music magazines of either an indie, rock or heavy metal genre. Through calculating the percentages of Rolling Stone, NME and Kerrang, it shows that 65% of people prefer to buy this type of magazine. This also shows that there are a lot of people that read these three magazines and that I must create a Unique Selling Point in order to attract the same audience as those who read Rolling Stone, NME and Kerrang.
