Front Cover:
The title of the magazine I am analyzing is called New Music Express (NME). The title connotes with the genre of the magazine which is obviously music. The strap line of NME is 'the story so far...'. This is basic and doesn't really show any indication of what genre the magazine is but it implies the quantity of articles inside. The main image on the cover is of the Arctic Monkeys, obviously a very known band. It is a studio medium long shot. The clothes that the Arctic Monkeys are wearing indicates that the theme of the magazine is indie. Their facial expressions are very natural, it is not a very posed shot and their direction of gaze is looking straight at the camera. The main image takes up the whole cover; there are no other images on the cover and it isn't actually necessary for there to be any because if there were any more images on there it would look cluttered. Less is more. The content promoted by the cover shows the Arctic Monkeys who are also the main image so this indicates there is an article about them inside. However, there are very few cover lines that say what is in the content of the magazine. The only other cover line is 'the first ever issue of NME inside' and this definitely gives this particular article a USP. The fonts used on the front cover are all the same colour. they are all black and their is a little bit of gold on there too. This looks simple yet effective as it doesn't make the cover look cluttered at all. There are approximately 7 fonts on the cover of the issue I am analyzing however because they are all the same colour, this does not matter. The language featured on the front cover features quotes said by the Arctic Monkeys, this engages the reader and shows exclusivity to the magazine. There is lots of emphasis on certain words such as 'plus' and 'exclusive' which draws the reader in. Theres also a lot of exclamation marks used on the cover which makes it seem very exciting. Personally, i think that the cover of NME looks different to a lot of other music magazines. This is because it is very plain compared to magazines such as Q or Kerrang. The cover of NME just features a plain white back ground with a studio shot as the main and only image. the colour scheme is just black, white and gold which is a contrast to Q or Kerrang where the main image takes up the whole cover and there are sometimes other images on the front. The colour schemes of Q or Kerrang are also much brighter than NME, they often use reds, yellows and blacks. There is also a lot more writing and different types of fonts on magazines such as Q or Kerrang. NME looks much more simple but effective however Q and Kerrang clearly scream the genre of magazine that
they are. They also may be much more eye catching if they were on a shelf in the shop.
Inside
NME is a weekly magazine with a total of 66 pages. 18 oh which, are adverts. The main things that are advertised in this issue of NME is things that will appeal to the target audience of teenagers and young adults. There are mobile phone adverts, adverts for broadband and also a lot of adverts for music gigs and tour dates. This clearly features to the readers of the magazine because it is a music magazine. There are many articles featured in this magazine. These include:
There are approximately 14 double page spreads. Usually focussing on particular bands of artists. one page is usually a studio shot of the band/artist and then the other page is the article to go with the picture. There are 3 double page spreads based on reviews. Reviews of festivals, gigs, albums etc.
