Based completely on the LAYOUT of double page spreads for R&B magazines, I have picked out my favourite ones so that i can pick out all the features to them that drew me to them, hoping that my audience would be drawn to mine in the same way.
This double page spread from Vibe magazine features Solange Knowles who is the sister of Beyonce. The article itself highlights that although Solange is the sister of world superstar, Beyonce, Solange herself is just as amazing and she has created one of the best R&B albums of the year. Looking simply at the layout of this double page spread, there are 8 images. 7 of which are all the SAME SIZE, SAME COLOUR (black and white) and just DIFFERENT POSES and these 7 images are all used to HIGHLIGHT THE MAIN IMAGE which is in a major CONTRASTING COLOUR of mainly red and the colours themselves have clearly been edited so that they are made to look brighter. The MAIN IMAGE displays Solange looking and standing directly in front of the camera. A very simple pose and positioning however it works well and certainly stands out among the page. The rest of the page is in black, white and grey apart from the SOLANGE KNOWLES written in blue on the subheading of the spread. The double page spread is very NEAT and TIDY. the COLUMNS OF WRITING are all perfectly positioned with the SAME SIZE FONT throughout apart from the one pull quote which is written in a much BOLDER FONT and it is also a lot larger than the rest of the writing. The PULL QUOTE is completely relevant to the article and expresses deep feeling and emotions said by the Solange. The pull quote may even surprise the reader which is what influences the reader to continue with reading it. On this particular double page spread, there are two different backgrounds. The first background is on the top half of the page, it is a white and very light grey GRADIENT and it is definitely showing that the IMAGES at the top of the page were all shot in a STUDIO. There are then 5 black lines showing DIFFERENTIATION between the images and the article and this highlights the 7 images at the top almost as if they are at the header of the page. The second background is the plain white one that sits behind the article itself. This works well with they grey font used and also for the contrasting main image.
The next double page spread I found is completely different to the one of Solange. This one of Amy Winehouse was in Rolling Stone magazine. The MAIN FEATURES of this article is inevitably the image that takes up the whole page and the white bed sheets are then used as a background for the black text used t write the article itself. The IMAGE is in black and white, fitting in with the colour scheme of the rest of the page however the image still stands out as it is very large and actually takes up one page of the magazine as Amy is justified to the right hand side of the page. The image is a natural shot. Amy is just looing down, not in a particular pose of position, just looking natural laying on a bed. However it is definitely a STUDIO SHOT as the lighting is perfect and Amy looks flawless, showing signs of PHOTOSHOP EDITING. The most noticable feature of this article is the LACK OF ARTICLE. althought this is a double page spread, the writing barely takes up a sixth of the spread. The article features just two columns, all very neat with JUSTIFIED TEXT of all the SAME COLOUR, FONT AND SIZE. This is the same as the first double page spread i analysed which shows that having the same font, sizing and colour is an important feature of an article. This double page spread however varies as there aren't actually any out standing PULL QUOTES. The only piece of text that stands out is the title, which is extremely large and actually takes up half of one of the pages, it is written in an UNUSUAL and DREERY font.
