Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Here is my preliminary task:

and my final product:

There are obviously a lot of differences between my preliminary task and my final product and comparing the two has allowed me to see how much progression I have made.

How have you approached the two tasks and how have you managed your time, equipment and other resources?

Both tasks had completely different approaches because obviously, one is a school magazine and the other, a music magazine. This meant that there were completely different conventions within both. For example, the photography on my school magazine was a lot more basic. It was in a natural setting (school) and the models were just simply dressed in their school uniform. However, on my music magazine, the photography had to be much more exact. The model had to look as if she was really old even though she was only 16, she had to be dressed in clothes that would represent the genre of my magazine with much more serious poses and facial expressions to also represent this and lastly, it was not in a natural setting. She basically just had to model in front of a white wall so that she could be cut out and easily edited. Overall, the pictures for my music magazine had to look much more professional to my preliminary task meaning they took a lot longer to capture the right picture and then to also edit them after.

When doing my preliminary task, I was very new to using Photoshop and it was actually the first project I had used photoshop to complete. My lack of understanding of the use of photoshop meant that my final preliminary task was very basic however it taught me a lot of things that I wouldn't have understood had I have no done the prelimary task such as adding and changing the text and even basic things like adding layers everytime a new element is added.

In terms of managing my time, my preliminery task did not take long in comparison to my final product which did but that was because my preliminery task was very, very basic compared to my final product. For my school magazine, it basically consisted of me taking a few photos and choosing the best one, edit it a little then put it into photoshop to make the coverline texts around it. And the contents page was basically a blue background followed by text all over it. However my music magazine was much more technical than that. First of all I had to research into the the typical conventions of a music magazine by comparing many existing ones such as NME, Q and Kerrang. I then had to take pictures (I took over 400 pictures just trying to find that one amazing one that would be suitable, including over 4 different photo shoots with 2 different models), I then had to edit the pictures so that they were absolutely flawless which took a very long time to do. Then using dafont.com I had to go through, searching and downloading fonts that I thought would look affective. I then had to think of all the coverlines, making them fit to the language of the genre of music mag that I was perusing and then I had to put it all together and that was just for the front page! I then had to pretty much do the exact same for the contents page. Then for the double page spread, I had to use a completely alien programme that I had never used before so getting used to using that took some time and then writing up my article so it also fit with the conventional language, getting the appropriate pictures etc. So basically, I had to spend A LOT more time focusing on my final product than my prelimary task however the prilimary task did allow me to understand that getting used to using new and different types of technology does take time.
